1. Turn in Of Mice and Men essay [final draft].
Make sure you underline thesis and topic sentences; highlight your quotes.
Make sure you cite your quotes correctly.
Make sure you have a title: "Of Mice and Men essay" is NOT a title.
Make sure you had two people revise with the checklist rubric on the back of essay handout.
Staple your final draft over your rough draft. Insert into the packet [without stapling the essays to the packet] Turn in.
2. Make sure you turn in Of Mice and Men Chapters 1-6 + the character chart. Make sure all your responses are clear, in complete sentences, and do not begin with a pronoun.
3. Film Of Mice and Men. Take notes to transfer responses to your question handout.
HOMEWORK: Bring "Phrases and Clauses" grammar warm-up. This handout was given on Thursday, November 18. Only two people did not receive this handout due to an absence on this day. If you lost it, photocopy someone else's so you are prepared tomorrow. We will check in class.

Take notes on characterization of Curley's wife, [direct and indirect] Curley's wife's motivation for marrying Curley, why she is a "wife with no name," a moment of silence as the narrator's respect for her after her death, and the reason why she appears "pretty" after she is dead. Also, take note on Candy and George's shattered dreams.
2. Discuss Of Mice and Men Ch. 4 and review Focus Questions for Ch. 4.

1. Copy notes on Conjunctions and Interjections Please ask for handout when you return from your absence.
2. Of Mice and Men NOTES: Copy/discuss these notes.
- Setting is the Salinas Valley area in California- Between 1920-1935 approx.
- Each chapter in the novel begins with a description of the setting.
- Novel contains six chapters: Can be easily adapted to a play
- Themes related to friendship, isolation, loneliness, alienation, death as a release from pain
- Prejudice against people who are disadvantaged or handicapped.
- Racism against the African American (separate living quarters)
- Vernacular (everyday speech) includes poor usage: Use of double negatives, cursing, foul language, slang, and idioms.
- Use of the "N" word common in this time period to denote race. Not meant as a derogatory term.
- Characters uneducated. Ironically, the Black character in the story reads sophisticated books.
- Narrator displays a high degree of sympathy toward characters who belong to a minority, are handicapped, crippled, or lonely.
Make a chart to jot down notes on foreshadowing, and Characterization: direct and indirect.

Now read the passage on page 3 where Lennie plays with the water in the pool "Lennie dabbled his big paw in the water and wiggled his fingers..." (3). [ 4th paragraph from top]. What do Lennie's actions tell us about his mental age?
