The Tragedy of Othello ACT I


Directions:
1) On a sheet of paper, answer each question in complete sentences, restating the

question in your response. Skip a line between answers.  Use pen.

2) Choose a significant quote from each scene and explain it. (One for Scene 1; one

for Scene 2; one for Scene 3)

3) Draw one picture of any of the scenes in ACT I on white paper. Color it.

Label it “OTHELLO: ACT I”. Staple it as a cover sheet for questions. Staple this

question sheet as the last sheet. Your questions will be “sandwiched between the two sheets.

1. What is Roderigo complaining about in the opening scene?

2. Why does Iago say he hates Othello so much, and what does he mean when he says, “In following him, I follow but myself?”

3. What do Iago and Roderigo hope to accomplish by shouting insulting remarks about Othello and Desdemona under Brabantio’s window?

4. How does Brabantio feel about Roderigo’s previous request to marry Desdemona? What does he assume are the reasons for Roderigo’s visit?

5. How does Brabantio change his attitude toward Roderigo at the end of this scene?
