1. Antigone background. Read ANTIGONE: "Sophocles and His Theater" Take notes:
A. Greek Tragedy: Tragic Hero: 1) Is of high standing/position 2) Has tragic flaw (defect in character or moral values) 3) Realizes tragic flaw only when it is too late.
B. The play Antigone is the 3rd play in a three part saga:
1. Oedipus Rex (the King)
2. Oedipus at Colonus
3. Antigone
C. The Greek Tragedies were written and performed in honor of the god Dionysos. They were intended for the audience to experience CATHARSIS (emotional cleansing/inner purification). In other words, the people needed to learn from the tragic hero's mistake.
D. Fill out Antigone introductory activities.
