1.  Farewell to Manzanar Ch. 12-17 completed and discussed these chapters...Jeanne Wakatsuki's description of Manzanar becoming an all-American town, her exploration of activities within the camp, inability to assimilate the Japanese culture into her life, her detachment from her parents,  Woody's departure, and Papa's final thoughts as America drops two bombs over Japan, ending WWII.

2.  Study Farewell to Manzanar Vocabulary glossary words with * for quiz tomorrow.

Periods 5 - 7

1.  Checked vocabulary workbooks for lesson XXI.  Quiz tomorrow.

2.  Reviewed comma usage and worked on comma exercises.

3.  Will complete reading of Farewell to Manzanar tomorrow. Ch. 18-22

2.  Discussed L.A. essays with students who turned them in yesterday.  All students need to turn in their essays.  Failure to do so will be a zero for the essay and a zero for homework.

Farewell to Manzanar Ch. 12-17.  Students worked on questions while teacher met with students to discuss grades. Caught up on make-ups/tests.

2.  Olsen Project Expository Essay # 1 : 
Write an essay explaining the importance of learning from the past. Write rough draft on template.  Due tomorrow, 2/27.

1.  Farewell to Manzanar Vocabulary Quiz 2  * and 4;  This week Vocabulary Lesson XXI. Due Thurs.

2.  Farewell to Manzanar:  Worked on group packets to complete this task. Students will complete at lunch if not finished during class.

3.  "Hero"  essays were stamped if revised and written on template.  Students took home the persuasive analysis graphic organizer to analyze their own essays.  Due tomorrow, 2/26.

Persuasive Essay Analysis:  "Why Every Responsible American Should Turn Their Daughter Into a Man" by Scottie Hughes at PatriotUpdate.com

Read the persuasive essay and analyze with Persuasive essay graphic organizer. Classes discussed grabber, writer's position,, opposing side, reasons for supporting position, logos, pathos, ethos, and specific details used in the essay as well as essay closure.

Students will take their original drafts and rewrite them.

1.  I Had Seen Castles:  Discuss symbolism, tone, motif.

Take notes on symbolism in I Had Seen Castles:

1) Explain motif of "birds flying" and symbolism of birds, castle, sheep, and empty room.
2) Explain symbolism and connection of first chapter empty room p. 4 to passage on pg. 76.

3) Explain TONE and attitude in novel.

Notes:

Motif: a recurring image, idea, or theme in a work of literature, film, etc.
Symbol: a symbol represents something larger/greater than itself.
Symbols in I Had Seen Castles:

Castle: symbol of John's passage from childhood to maturity
pg. 25-26 The castle is a gift from father as a young child. He plays with it until he outgrows it and then sees it in the basement during his teen years growing up. John is growing up; he no longer plays with the toy castle, but he is still a growing teen.pg. 70-71: John sees a real castle far off in the distance. John becomes a grown man with childhood a great distance away.

Sheep: soldiers, innocent and naive; following the government's instructions, they waited for the farmer (the government) to take them home, but many were killed in war (sheep lay bloody, half alive) like many of the soldiers, who died almost immediately after beginning to fight, alone and afraid.

Birds: symbolize freedom; the birds recur throughout the novel, first on pages 4, 59, and 70.

Empty room: symbolizes the trauma of war. See page 4 and page 76.

1.  Introduce background to Farewell to Manzanar.  Discuss the American hostility toward Oriental races from 1889 to 1952, and the internment of Japanese Americans and legal immigrants after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Read Foreward and Chronology.

2.  Notes:  Terms to Know:  Issei, Nisei, and Sansei.  Copy term definitions on page 8.  If you were absent copy the notes from one of your peers.

3. Farewell to Manzanar:  Read to page 20.

HOMEWORK:  Bring definitions for Night vocabulary:  41-60 for homework grade.
